MUSICAL DIRECTOR - BRIAN COX
Brian's musical career began at the age of 8 when he joined the Hade Edge Silver Band in Holmfirth, Yorkshire playing cornet. He progressed at secondary school on to the tuba and string bass. He eventually joined the Band of The Life Guards in 1975.
Brian spent 2 years at the Royal Military School of Music, Kneller Hall, in order to gain comprehensive training in music. In 1977 he arrived at the Life Guards, only to be sent away for 6 months to learn how to ride a horse - no mean feat with a tuba strapped to you. He stayed with the Life Guards until 1990 reaching the rank of Lance Corporal of Horse, playing in the concert band, dance band, orchestra, rock band and quartet performing at many prestigious engagements around the world.
Brian played tuba, string bass, bass guitar and even cavalry trumpet during his time with the army. It was during this time that Brian developed an interest in conducting and band rehearsal technique having worked under many senior Directors of Music including Colonel Trevor Sharpe.
Since leaving the army Brian has continued to play and conduct with numerous bands, both wind and brass. Brian formed the Norwood Wind Ensemble in January 2008 with his wife Sarah and is currently their Musical Director.
Brian has been directing Copthorne Silver Band since March 2013.
